Every
field becomes a battlefield, every tree line refuge. The collective
memory is permeated with destructive events, lived or told, and with
last moments, a desire for self-extraction, escape... and a normality
pregnant with apprehension. At the beginning of Lem's (and Tarkovsky's)
Solaris, a man parting with the world examines bits of nature. Diver
is a long goodbye.
Despite
the obvious lure of the cinematic when working with sequenced images,
inspiration and courage for the internal organization of the work was
derived wholly from the various structuring principles underlying large-form
classical music. Structure is traced both horizontally (melodic - thematic
development) and vertically (harmonic - overall evocation.) |
