Bee Flowers Bee grew up in Holland, but spent several teenage years in Egypt. He has lived and worked in Russia for much of the 90s. Intimately familiar with differing cultures, he has developed a deep fascination with cultural signifiers in the everyday. In his Russian project, the rapid disappearance of the Soviet way of life and the emergence of a new value system are explored through objects and their context. An early affinity for Russian literature and music made him take up Russian language at Amsterdam University. The exposure to Soviet political history motivated him to travel and witness the workings of the totalitarian state from within. First visiting Moscow in 1989, the energized turmoil of Perestroika and the ensuing collapse of the USSR inspired him to spend much time in Moscow. Using
digital art techniques and photography, Bee has created a body of work
focused on societal change, using people's habitat, various everyday objects
and media imagery as the primary signifiers. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows, and is represented in the collection of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, as well as other public and private collections. |
