Our behaviour and social relations arise not only from innate drives or culturally learned norms, but also from the technological settings that surround us. Many obstacles are man-made — from road markings and traffic signals to the architecture of social media. We are compelled to adjust, letting our desires be shaped not by nature but by unseen teams of engineers and designers. Where, then, is the authentic self — and does it exist at all?
